Digital Age Loneliness: Fear Hindering Relationships

In the digital age, where apps and social media have revolutionized how we connect, many people suffer from loneliness but do nothing to change it out of fear. This was stated by psychologist and sexologist Gabriela Alesi in an interview with the Argentine News Agency (NA) on Valentine's Day. The specialist noted that in today's consumer society, focused on immediacy and minimizing risks, people often avoid deep commitment. 'Regardless of the expanded range of relationships, there must be a commitment to building with the other person, a willingness to compromise and tolerate, and that's something we don't want,' she emphasized. According to her, intimacy with another person is not just sex but getting to know them, listening to their fears and thoughts. Studies, such as one from the University of Wrocław in over 50 countries, show that relationships initiated online often have less satisfaction, passion, and depth. The reason, the expert believes, is that people confuse sex with intimacy, whereas true intimacy arises from differences, mystery, and the desire to explore another person. However, society is still influenced by heteronormative standards, and many, despite claiming to be open, are not truly ready for diverse forms of relationships.
